This is a postcard titled

"Picturesque Thiers: The Cutlers"

(estimated date 1919)

At that time, professional photographers crossed France to take photographs of traditional trades, towns and villages, tourist sites to make postcards (main travel souvenirs at the time), it is the oldest visual testimony that we have of our history. This photo was taken in 1919 in our workshop (which we called a "spinning wheel") in the village of Moulin Neuf, on the banks of the river La Durolle (which can be seen under the trees in front of the windows) The "master grinders", lying on boards, carry out the grinding operation by hand, that is to say the beveling (in a "V") of the blades by friction on large stone millstones, using the strength of their arms, using the weight of their upper body. The millstones are driven by the driving energy of the river water.

A small dog can be seen lying on a knife grinder's lap, keeping its master warm. The central figure, seated, is Joseph Tarrerias (eighth generation cutler), and in the doorway in the background is his wife, also a cutler. An 11-year-old girl, slightly out of focus, can be seen in the foreground, performing hand polishing (a gentler method for shining the blades). This is Marie Bonjean (daughter of eleven generations of cutlers). In 1926, she married Lucien Tarrerias (Joseph's son) and worked with him. Together, they founded the Tarrerias-Bonjean company (TB), thus combining their two family names... forever. Their son, Georges Tarrerias, married Andree Bouterige in 1965, and they worked together. Their children, Carole and Eric TARRERIAS, are the current managers of the company ... and the new generation of cutlers.

Faced with the company's uninterrupted growth, the managers, Carole and Eric Tarrerias, were forced to move. They left the historic "Brûlé" site in Celles-sur-Durolle to move to a new building in Pommier Chansonnière in La Monnerie-le-Montel. With its 1,300 m² of offices and 4,700 m² of storage space, this move was also an opportunity to introduce automated order preparation technology (PTS).

Tarrerias Bonjean, in the circle of the Henokiens

We have the great honour of announcing that Tarrerias Bonjean has joined the prestigious circle of Henokiens, an association bringing together family businesses whose history goes back more than two centuries. Founded in 1981, this international association is distinguished by its high standards: only family businesses that are run by the descendants of the founders and that continue to operate from their original headquarters can join. This exclusivity makes it a very restricted club, where sustainability and family transmission occupy a primordial place.

Tarrerias Bonjean: a story that spans the ages

Founded in 1580 by Claude Tarrerias, a master knife grinder in the Thiers region, Tarrerias Bonjean has embodied the passion for cutlery since its beginnings. Thirteen generations of master knife makers have succeeded one another to make this company what it is today: a key player in French cutlery, combining tradition and innovation. The family heritage, carefully passed down to each generation, bears witness to the perseverance and passion for this profession, written into the very DNA of the company.

The company has evolved over the centuries, mastering every step of knife manufacturing. After the Second World War, Lucien Tarrerias and his wife Marie Bonjean propelled the company to an industrial dimension, making Tarrerias Bonjean a reference in the field. Since 1998, our company has taken on the challenge of maintaining an entirely French production, proudly embodying the know-how of "made in France".

A commitment to the future

Today led by the 13th generation, represented by Eric and Carole Tarrerias, Tarrerias Bonjean continues to innovate, as evidenced by the creation of Evercut® technology, which revolutionizes blade durability. At every stage of our development, we focus on continuous improvement, creativity and respect for the environment, with a view to sustainability and performance.

With our entry into the circle of Henokiens, we celebrate more than 440 years of history, an uninterrupted cutlery tradition and a future that we continue to build with passion and determination.

Tarrerias Bonjean is more than a company, it is a family history that continues, exceptional know-how, and today, a pride to be a member of the Hénokiens.

A prestigious recognition

The Henokiens symbolize excellence and longevity in the business world. Being part of this association demonstrates an unwavering commitment to the family heritage and the ability to span the centuries while innovating. Tarrerias Bonjean, by joining this association, shows that its values of excellence, transmission and innovation are recognized internationally. It is a tribute to our longevity and our know-how passed down from generation to generation for more than four centuries.

TB-1648: The Epic of French Cutlery, from 1648 to the Present Day

The history of cutlery in Thiers would not be complete without mentioning the saga of the Tarrerias family. Much more than a mere manufacturing company, TB-1648 embodies the perseverance of a lineage that has spanned centuries, industrial revolutions, economic crises, and gastronomic evolutions to bring French sharpness to the pinnacle of its art. Immerse yourself in over four centuries of excellence, from the artisanal forge of the 17th century to the precision laser technologies of the 21st century.

This journey through time takes us back to the very roots of the Thiers basin, where river water powered the grindstones of the grinders and the forge fires never went out. The TB-1648 brand is today the standard-bearer of this intangible heritage, transforming a simple kitchen tool into an object of generational transmission. Every blade produced is a promise kept: that of quality, durability, and respect for the culinary gesture.

A Chronology Etched in Steel: The Legacy of the Hénokiens

The strength of our manufacture lies in its living memory. Belonging to the Hénokiens, this extremely closed and prestigious circle of family businesses over 200 years old, is not just an honorary accolade; it is a daily responsibility towards excellence. Here are the historical milestones that have forged our unique identity and resilience through the ages:

  • 1580: The first written traces of the Tarrerias family appear in the parish registers of the Thiers region. Already, at this time, the unbreakable link with metalwork and craftsmanship was emerging in local archives.
  • 1648: This is the pivotal year, the founding date. The family's cutler's mark is officially registered and recorded. This is the starting point of an uninterrupted industrial and family adventure that has lasted for over 375 years.
  • 18th century: The era of expansion. The family distinguished itself by the remarkable quality of its pocket and table blades. TB became a respected name, supplying both country inns and the grand residences of the French nobility.
  • 1966: Modernization and global vision. Creation of the modern structure "Tarrerias Bonjean" (TB), sealing the union of two complementary know-hows under the impetus of the 11th generation, marking the transition to high-precision industrial production.
  • 1996: Breakthrough innovation. Launch of Evercut® technology, a global revolution that allows a blade to retain its sharpness for over 20 years without any sharpening, proving that tradition does not preclude avant-garde.
  • 2024 and beyond: Identity evolution. TB Group officially becomes TB-1648 on its premium segments. A signature that proudly embraces its temporal roots while remaining the undisputed leader in cutlery innovation in France.

The Art of the Blade: Between Thiers Tradition and High Technology

The Thiers basin is the historical cradle of French cutlery. It is here, between the steep reliefs of the Auvergne mountains and the impetuous rivers, that our ancestors learned to tame steel, master fire, and harness water for quenching. Today, TB-1648 uses this ancestral know-how, passed down from father to son and mother to daughter, to meet the surgical demands of Michelin-starred chefs and cooking enthusiasts.

Our manufacturing process combines the human hand, irreplaceable for finishing control, with advanced robotics for perfect regularity. We believe that perfection lies in this delicate balance between the artisan's soul and the machine's rigor.

Each TB-1648 blade is designed for precise movements, respecting the cellular structure of food. A clean cut is not just aesthetic: it preserves juices, prevents premature oxidation of vegetables, and maintains the juiciness of meats.

Whether you are working with a noble product or an everyday ingredient, the quality of your cutting tool will determine the success of your dish. It is this precision that makes the difference between cooking and creating.

Perfect foods to enhance with TB-1648

  • Root vegetables: The penetrating power of our chef's knives allows you to effortlessly slice pumpkins, celeriac, and other dense vegetables.
  • Exceptional meats: Our forged steak knives ensure a clean cut that prevents the expulsion of juices, guaranteeing tender meat with every bite.

Comparison guide and choosing the ideal model

It can sometimes be complex to navigate the diversity of our collections. Each range has been designed to meet a specific culinary philosophy. Whether you are a professional seeking raw performance, or an amateur sensitive to contemporary design, there is a TB-1648 knife made for you. The choice is based on three criteria: weight, balance, and desired maintenance frequency.

Comparison of emblematic ranges

Range Style & Design Target Audience Required Maintenance

Maintenance: preserving the Legacy

A high-quality knife is an investment that requires special attention. Maintenance should not be seen as a constraint, but as a ritual of respect for the tool. By taking care of your blade, you honor the work of the master cutler who forged it and ensure its performance for the next forty years.

Essential steps for caring for your knives

  1. Washing: Always prefer a soft sponge and lukewarm soapy water. Avoid abrasive pads that scratch the mirror or satin finish of the steel.
  2. Drying: This is the most ignored and yet the most crucial step. Immediately wipe your blade with a soft cloth to prevent micro-stains from limescale or oxidation.
  3. Storage: Never leave your knives loose in a drawer. Use a wooden block, a magnetic bar, or individual sheaths to prevent the blades from clashing.
  4. Regular honing: For classic ranges, regular passes on a quality honing steel help realign the blade's edge and maintain razor sharpness daily.

Safety first: Handling excellence

The exceptional performance of a TB-1648 blade requires vigilant and responsible handling. Our knives are delivered with an extremely sharp "factory fresh" edge. Kitchen safety is the basis of any successful culinary learning.

Usage precautions for a serene kitchen

  • Cutting surface: Work exclusively on end-grain wooden or food-grade plastic cutting boards. Glass, ceramic, and marble are too hard and will instantly dull your blade's edge.
  • Proper use: A kitchen knife is a precision instrument, not a DIY tool. Never use it as a lever or to cut overly dense bones without the appropriate equipment.
  • Constant vigilance: Never try to catch a falling knife. Step away and let it fall to the ground. The safety of your hands takes precedence over that of the object.
  • Secure storage: Always store your cutting tools out of reach of children and pets, ideally in a dedicated and secure location.

Transmission: An unwavering family commitment

For 13 generations, the Tarrerias family has passed on the torch of cutlery. What began in a modest forge near a Thiers stream has become a jewel of French industry, recognized internationally. Our belonging to the Hénokiens highlights this rare ability to evolve without ever denying its core values: commercial integrity, impeccable quality, and constant innovation.

Each knife engraved with the TB-1648 logo is a piece of history. By choosing a product from our manufacture, you also become the guardian of a tradition that has survived centuries. We do not make objects for a season, but for a lifetime of shared pleasures around the table. Thank you for being part of this human and artisanal adventure that continues to be written, every day, under your fingers.

TB-1648: Time passes, excellence remains.
