Top Chef - Episode 1

Top Chef - Épisode 1

The sixteenth season of "Top Chef" premiered on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, on M6, offering viewers a revamped and surprising culinary competition. From the very first episode, the contestants faced demanding challenges, under the watchful eyes of the chef judges, with a unique collaboration with the Michelin Guide as the ultimate goal.

A spectacular opening onto the rooftops of Paris
The inaugural episode opened on the rooftop terrace of Printemps Haussmann, offering breathtaking views of the capital. It was in this exceptional setting that seven of the fourteen contestants were welcomed by Stéphane Rotenberg and the five chef judges: Philippe Etchebest, Hélène Darroze, Paul Pairet, Glenn Viel, and Stéphanie Le Quellec. Among them, one couple particularly caught the eye: Philippine and Charles, partners in life and now rivals in the competition.

First challenge: revisiting a classic
For this first challenge, the contestants were asked to reinvent an iconic French dish: chicken and potatoes. The goal was to surprise the chefs by
offering a personal and innovative interpretation of this great classic.

Bold creations
- Quentin, 24, offered a "Furthermore Poultry with Mayo", a poultry fricassee with liver port, accompanied by a chicken sabayon.
- Charles, 32, opted for crispy chicken skin tiles, adding a touch of originality to his dish.
- Philippine, 30, Charles' partner, presented a trompe-l'œil thigh
Chicken in dauphine potatoes, demonstrating his creativity.
- Noémie, 36, a specialist in wood-fired cooking, has created a cannolo of chicken supreme stuffed with garlic puree, accompanied by a fig leaf jus.
- Esteban, 28, offered a chicken lollipop.
- Noah, 30 years old, presented a chicken cooked in 3 ways with a variation of potato.
- Kilian Franceschi, 21, the youngest competitor, tried to impress the jury with a reinterpretation incorporating coffee.

After tasting, each chef selected the candidate they wanted to add to their brigade. Hélène Darroze chose Philippine, Paul Pairet opted for Esteban, Philippe Etchebest selected Charles, while Glenn Viel and Stéphanie Le Quellec were both impressed by Quentin's performance, a dish full of emotion. Quentin will join Chef Glenn Viel's brigade, and Chef Stéphanie Le Quellec will invite Noé to join hers. Noémi and Kilian will face off in the elimination challenge.

Second challenge: to cook gourmet food on a limited budget
The five selected candidates then participated in a challenge in the "Top Chef" kitchens. The challenge was to create a gourmet dish for four Michelin Guide inspectors with a budget of 16 euros, or 4 euros per plate. The plates were tasted blind by the inspectors, while the candidates watched the tasting on screen, accompanied by a friend or family member. At the end of this challenge, Quentin discovered a red envelope under his kitchen cloche, indicating that his dish had been the inspectors' "favorite." If he receives a second "favorite" later in the competition, he will qualify directly for the quarterfinals. Elimination challenge: apple and pear pairing. Meanwhile, Noémie and Kilian competed on the theme of apple and pear pairing. The five chefs tasted both dishes blind and preferred Noémie's, who thus earned the right to wear the black jacket of the "lone candidate," without a brigade. Kilian, meanwhile, was eliminated from the competition.

Conclusion
The first episode of season 16 of "Top Chef" laid the groundwork for a competition brimming with culinary innovations and challenges. With contestants boasting unique backgrounds, revamped challenges, and a groundbreaking collaboration with the Michelin Guide, this season promises to be one of the most captivating in the show's history. Viewers can expect a season full of surprises, where passion, creativity, and gastronomic excellence will take center stage.

An unprecedented alliance with the Michelin Guide
This season marks a historic collaboration with the Michelin Guide. For the first time, the anonymous inspectors of the renowned guide will appear on the show to evaluate the contestants' dishes according to their usual criteria: quality of ingredients, technical skill, harmony of flavors, culinary personality, and consistency. The winner of this edition will have the exceptional opportunity to open a pop-up restaurant the day after the finale, with the possibility of earning a Michelin star.

The Hidden Brigades: A Second Chance Tenfold
Another major new feature is the introduction of two "Hidden Brigades" within the competition. This parallel competition, overseen by Michelin-starred chefs Éric Frechon and Fabien Ferré, offers a second chance to candidates eliminated prematurely. Each week, three candidates compete in demanding challenges, with the goal of rejoining the main competition during the final stages. This initiative underscores the importance of education and support throughout the candidates' journey.
Looking forward to discovering the other 7 candidates next week.
